Why were black people forced to seat at the back at churches pre-60s ?

i remember a bunch of black priests were dragged from their front row seats and tossed into the back because they refused to seat at the back. this happened in philadelphia to allen (a popular pastor in philly in the 1800s). what kind of christianity were white people practicing back then ? were they real born again christians ?
